bio

Chilluminati are sewer-dwelling electrorap mutants. Pampered in paradise yet dejected and self-doubting, they have engineered their own reality from the scraps left by an insatiable society.

Chilluminati is a recombining of longtime co-creators, Lachie and Justin. During the hiatuses of their other bands Jenova Birth and Bladderwig, they decided to give this rap thing a go because surely it can’t be that hard. A while later they found themselves recording psychotic rap verses into cheap microphones in 24-hr laundromats, abandoned saunas and the front seat of Lachie’s van. Their lyrics cover environmental and cultural collapse, crippling social anxiety, unconditional love for all things, and the constant threat of fatal sunburn. Musically they draw inspiration from UK garage and grime, shoegaze and noise-rock, dream pop and drum ’n’ bass. Their mutual heroes include The Streets, Enter Shikari, Azalea Banks and Bill Mollison.

The duo’s journey toward musical expression is intertwined with their seperate battles with mental health, and their messy search for purpose, connection and clarity. They treat life as part art, part experiment, and both seek alternatives to the most common answers about how we should live and thrive. They often live and record out of their vans, Justin has travelled far and wide on his healing journey and they have both dabbled in permaculture in an attempt to gather modern and ancient wisdom. They hope to channel any success from this project into creating community, and remediating our damaged planet and collective psyche.
